Miscellaneous Items

Late in the 19th century Philip Shrapnel and his son Leonard were the owners and patentees of a grand Illuminated Fountain which toured the North of England and Ireland. It was described as a spectacle of fairy splendour, playing to the strains of lovely music, performing feats of every colour with hundreds of jets of water. These rose and fell in concentric circles illuminated by powerful spotlights in changing and interchanging colours. The sight stirred with enthusiasm everyone who saw it.
I have copies of 24 glowing press reports from 1894 and 1895. It would be interesting to learn if anyone has any knowledge of the history of this magnificent display. Something of this magnitude must have had more than the two-years of which I have record.
